Anxiety can be described as a worry or nervousness about a future event or situation. Sometimes, the event or situation is unknown. Therefore, the fight against anxiety can be especially troubling.
Here are a few tips that will help you cope with anxiety:
- Talk about it. Finding someone to talk to about our feelings, is truly freeing. This someone can be a friend, a family member or even an anonymous individual at the end of a reputable phone line. However, the secret is not in the advice one receives in return, but in the expression of one’s feelings. Getting how you're really feeling out can help you cope with anxiety.
- Think about it. Anxiety can often cause us to feel overwhelmed. In order to cope, many of us distract ourselves by means of participating in other activities. While this can sometimes be helpful in the short run, it may be better to sit down and think about the way we feel. By acknowledging our feelings, we are better able to manage them.
- Drink water. It is easy to forget about our physical health when we are so preoccupied by other thoughts and worries. However, taking a few moments to replenish our bodies with water can help to clear our minds. A little water can go a long way.
- Create a to-do list. Sometimes we take on a few too many chores, or just have tons to do. When we are unable to accomplish all of our tasks immediately, we may begin to feel anxious. Lists can help us organize ourselves and allow us to practice effective time management. This is an important lesson in how to cope with anxiety. Creating a list of chores, and then arranging those chores from most important to least important, in terms of deadlines, can allow us to get things done most efficiently. Checking items off our list, once they are accomplished, can help us gain a feeling of control, and may thereby limit anxiety.
